Fire Prevention Week: Battery Safety and EV Smarts

This week, Oct. 4 to 10, is Fire Prevention Week here in Swift Current — and the city is shining a light on something we all need to know: how to charge lithium-ion batteries safely. Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere these days — in our phones, laptops, and electric vehicles. When charged or stored carelessly, they can pose a real fire risk. Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time to brush up on the basics: - Charge devices in well-ventilated areas, away from flammable stuff - Don't leave chargers plugged in for hours after your device is full - Keep batteries away from heat and direct sunlight - Buy chargers from trusted makers If you drive an EV, or are thinking about it, the city also wants folks prepared. Know where your vehicle's emergency shut-off is. Keep your battery in good shape with regular maintenance. And if you smell something odd or see warning lights, get it checked right away. A few minutes of care now can keep our homes and streets safer all season long.

“We're all looking out for each other when we know the facts — thanks for taking fire safety seriously, Swift Current.” — Uncle Sam
